What to Do If My System Seems To Be Slow or Sluggish?
It's important to be sure that the computer you plan to install BitDefender on meets the minimum system requirements. Otherwise, BitDefender will not be installed or, if installed, it may not work properly and could cause system slowdowns and instability.
BitDefender Registry Cleaner
A system can also get slow if a high amount of unnecessary information is stored in the Windows Registry. Many applications write keys in the Windows Registry at installation time. When removing such applications, some of their associated registry keys are not deleted and they slow down your system or even cause it to be unstable. The same happens when deleting shortcuts and corrupt drivers.
To improve the performance of your system you can use the BitDefender Registry Cleaner to scan the Windows Registry and to delete the invalid registry keys.
Disk defragmenter
A fragmented drive can also cause a system slowdown. Copying a file that exceeds the largest block of free space on the hard disk will cause that file to be stored in several blocks, not continuously. When the fragmented file is accessed, its data must be read from several different locations, which slows down the process and decreases system performance. It also speeds up hard disk wear. To reduce file fragmentation, you must defragment the disks periodically.
To improve the performance of your system you can use BitDefender Disk Defragmenter.
Antivirus settings
A third reason for a slow system could be the antivirus settings. For instance, on-access scans inside archives will affect the overall system performance.
Since archives do not pose an immediate threat to your system, we recommend you to set the on-access scanner to skip archives. The files stored in the archives will be scanned when the archive is decompressed. A safe measure is to scan the archives stored on your system with the on-demand scanner.
Performance Monitor
The new BitDefender Performance Monitor module allows you to determine running processes’ impact on your system in terms of CPU load, memory usage and hard disk use. This will help you identify resource hungry applications, and to close or monitor them.
To use Performance Monitor, from the Intermediate View, hit the Performance indication. Here you will find out where your computer stands against BitDefender performance ranking. A Performance Index is provided based on the amount of installed and average free RAM, the available disk space and the CPU type. You will also know how resources are used and which programs take up most CPU and memory.
When you click a program, a history of its CPU and memory utilization in the last 30 minutes will be displayed along with the program's name, installation path and description.
