How Do I Set Up and Configure the Age Filters in Parental Control?
In order to have access to the Parental Control features, you need to install BitDefender Internet Security or BitDefender Total Security on the computer that your children use.
You will then be able to configure the Parental Control settings in detail or just review each child’s activity and take actions from there.
BitDefender Parental Control allows you to supervise your children’s online activities by blocking:
- Inappropriate web pages;
- Internet access completely, for specific periods of time (such as when it's time for homework or chores).
- Web pages;
- E-mail and instant messages on which appear specific keywords;
- Games, chat, file sharing, or other programs;
- Instant messages sent by IM contacts other than those allowed.
Only the system administrator can access and configure Parental Control. When you enable this feature, make sure you protect its settings with a password so that no one else can change them.
To successfully use Parental Control you should:
- Create limited (standard) Windows user accounts for each child.
- Configure Parental Control for those Windows user accounts."
Let’s say you want set up Parental Control for an 10 years old child called Jack.
- First, create a standard Windows user account for Jack.
- Then log in to the administrator account
- To configure Parental Control in Intermediate View, access the Security tab and select Parental Control from the Quick Tasks area.
You can also access the Parental Control module from Expert View or from Basic View.
To configure Parental Control for a specific account, follow these steps:
- Enable this feature by turning on Parental control. You can retrieve the Jack's newly created account and turn on Parental Control.
- Select first the user’s age category, then his/her specific age.
- This will lead to the automatic loading of the appropriate settings, based on child development standards.
- To further configure Parental Control, select the Settings button next to the child’s account. Several tabs will be displayed in a new window.
- The Web tab contains a list of website categories, such as Illegal Drugs, or Weapons and Violence. You can view or select different actions for that category, such as blocking it completely, or restricting access to it based on a schedule you set up. You can also add individual web sites or create custom categories.
- The Applications tab allows you to block or restrict specific applications’ access or set up a schedule based on which your child is allowed to access certain programs (like games or IM)
- The Keywords tab allows you to prevent your child from viewing a website or sending an email or instant message that contains certain keywords or phrases. You can also prevent certain keywords or phrases from being transmitted by your child (for instance, your home address or other personal data).
- The Messaging tab allows you to turn on the email notifications feature so that you receive email reports on your child’s activity from BitDefender.
We will continue now by configuring Jack's account. We will select his age and configure the settings. For instance, we can block his access to web content related to tabloids and gambling. Then we can prevent him from accessing the Internet every day, from 22.00 PM on. Finally, we can choose “porn” as a keyword for his webpage access.
